“I No Longer Have to Go to the Café to Type ”: Helen’s Story

Helen M. Sesay once went to the café to type and print. Through Leaders Hub Foundation’s free IT training, she learned to use Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Now, she hopes to get a computer to keep practising.

Helen M. Sesay, a Cohort 1 participant in Leaders Hub Foundation’s free IT training programme. Before joining the training, Helen M. Sesay did not know how to switch on a computer or use a mouse.

When she needed to type , she went to the café.“

“I was even thinking of getting a book,” she said.

Then Sport for Empowerment Foundation Sierra Leone connected her with Leaders Hub Foundation’s free IT training programme. Helen had an opportunity to learn through practical lessons, with someone there to guide her.She started with the basics. Learning to switch on a computer and use a mouse gave her a foundation for working with other tools.

Helen appreciated her tutor’s patience and the way he explained things so she could understand. Having that support helped her work through unfamiliar tasks and keep learning.Over the month, she learned to type in Microsoft Word and use Excel and PowerPoint.

“I no longer have to go to the café to type” she said.

For Helen, this is a skill she can use in her everyday life. Typing is now something she knows how to do herself. Her words show the practical value of learning a skill she once needed help with. She wants to keep building on that progress.

Helen hopes to get a computer of her own so she can continue practising what she has learned. That next step matters. Having the skills is a foundation, and access to a computer would give her more opportunities to use them regularly.

Helen’s story shows how access to digital skills can make everyday life easier. Patient guidance and hands on practice helped her move from unfamiliarity with a computer to using tools that meet her everyday needs.

Her hope now is to keep learning, keep practising and become more confident in what she can do.
