Fatmata Kargbo, a Cohort 1 participant in Leaders Hub Foundation’s free IT training programme.
“Opportunity comes but once.”
That is Fatmata Kargbo’s advice to other young people. For her, it comes from an opportunity she chose to take.
When Leaders Hub Foundation opened its IT Learning Center, Fatmata was inspired by a young woman’s computer skills. Seeing someone young with that knowledge made her want to learn too.
“I wish I can be like her,” she said.
When she later heard about our free IT training programme, she was happy to join Cohort 1. It was a chance to begin learning the skills she admired.
Fatmata started with the basics. She did not know what the mouse, keyboard keys or Start button were for. These were unfamiliar parts of a computer that she needed to understand before moving on to other tasks.
Through lessons and hands-on practice, she learned to use them. Over the month, she went on to work with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
“I now know how to operate and work with Excel,” she said proudly.
She credits Leaders Hub Foundation for the skills she has gained. What began with wanting to be like someone else has become progress she can speak about for herself.
Fatmata also has a clear idea of how she hopes to use her learning.
“In the future, I want to work at the Ministry of Education. I can use these skills to input WASSCE and BECE results.”
Her ambition gives her new skills a purpose. She sees a connection between learning to work with information on a computer and the responsibilities she hopes to take on in education.
Her message to other young people is simple: take opportunities like this seriously, respect your tutor and pay attention during lessons.
Fatmata’s story shows how an opportunity to learn can help someone see new possibilities for their future. She joined with a desire to learn. Now, she has skills to build on and a goal she hopes to work towards.
